Hence Kramer/Fauci, Daniel Fish’s latest effort to find meaning in historical texts. The 1993 C-SPAN exchange between Kramer and Fauci is an example of productive, open-minded disagreement. The two men agreed that AIDS was a disaster, but Kramer was outside the government, blisteringly aware of how official bureaucracy dragged out a scientific process that needed to move at warp speed. Fauci was inside the beast. Kramer spoke the language of outrage and urgency; Fauci, that of cautious, measured progress. Their relationship had started out contentious, with Kramer lambasting Fauci in the press as an incompetent idiot, yet over years they developed deep mutual respect. In the play, Kramer acknowledges Fauci’s impossible position as an ordinary man asked to play God, acting as a lightning rod for national grief.
