On 12 August 2026, Europe witnessed its first total solar eclipse in over two decades. Millions of people were awed as the Moon completely covered the Sun's bright disc, briefly turning day into night and revealing the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona. This extraordinary phenomenon, known as totality, could be seen from Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. As the Moon blocked the Sun, the light faded rapidly, causing the temperature to drop. Shadows became sharper, and leaves on trees projected crescent shapes onto the ground. Right before the Sun was entirely covered, small beads of light, called Baily’s beads, appeared along the Moon’s edge. This occurred where sunlight passed through deep lunar valleys. Finally, with a bright flash of light known as the diamond ring effect, totality began. In an instant, darkness set in, and white streaks of light extended in all directions, showing the Sun's atmosphere in all its glory.
