I suffered from a mystery illness for decades before getting a diagnosis. It began when I was eleven, right after a normal virus. Instead of recovering, my body became stuck in a grey, unchanging state. I experienced headaches, sore throats, swollen lymph nodes, and extreme exhaustion. Sitting or standing up caused me to feel faint and momentarily black out. For decades, multiple doctors told me nothing was physically wrong with me. The prejudice of western medicine, which historically dismissed female patients, is a major problem now known as medical misogyny. However, years ago, this issue was rarely acknowledged. Like many other chronically ill patients, I faced this experience with silent despair. A doctor would look at my blood tests, which were actually fine, and tell me I was healthy while avoiding eye contact. It is a sad truth that the sicker you are, the harder it is to advocate for yourself.
