The BBC’s news department is going to cut costs by 15%, which is much higher than people expected. Workers have been warned to prepare for many job losses. This department, which has about a quarter of all BBC workers, must meet one of the hardest saving targets. The BBC is planning to cut up to 2,000 jobs. This is the biggest reduction in staff for the public broadcaster in 15 years. Last month, staff were told that about 10% of the BBC’s 21,500 workers would lose their jobs. This is part of a £600 million plan to save money. However, workers did not know then that the news department would face even deeper cuts. These big changes are happening as Matt Brittin, a former executive from Google, takes over as the new leader of the BBC on May 18.
