The history of abortion is very long and complex. In the past, people had different views about it. For example, in Europe between 1500 and 1800, abortion was quite common. Many women used plants from their gardens to stop their pregnancies. During this time, the Catholic Church did not think abortion in the early weeks was a big sin. They believed that a baby only got a soul after several weeks. However, in 1588, Pope Sixtus V changed this rule. He said that life starts at the moment of conception, so all abortions were like murder. This rule was very hard to follow, so another pope changed it back three years later. Today, we still argue about abortion. But history shows us that these debates are not new. It also shows us that women's choices and their bodies have always been part of a larger history.
