Leaders of Syria's Kurdish region have ended their independent administration and dissolved their security forces. General Mazloum Abdi announced the end of the Syrian Democratic Forces on Tuesday. These forces were close allies of the United States. Together, they defeated the extremist group ISIS in 2019. During years of heavy fighting, more than 10,000 Kurdish men and women lost their lives. Abdi said they did not fight because they loved war, but because they wanted a peaceful future.
