The Kurdish region was always surrounded by enemies, with Turkey on one side and the Syrian government on the other. Despite these dangers, ten years of self-rule helped the Kurdish people build a stronger identity. During a visit to the town of Qamishli, preparations for Kurdish celebrations were everywhere, even though residents worried about what would happen next. Recently, the new Syrian government forces began to take back control of the territory. Soon, important oil fields, which had been protected by U.S. forces, started sending oil to Damascus again. The new Syrian president has promised to give Kurds more rights. As the biggest ethnic minority in the country, the Kurds now hope that this new chapter will bring them peace.
