On March 21, 2023, I was violently snatched from the outskirts of Baghdad, where I had been conducting fieldwork for my Ph.D. at Princeton University. My kidnappers delivered me to a secret prison run by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia backed by Iran. This was the start of a captivity that would last for more than nine hundred days. Initially, the militiamen kidnapped me purely for ransom because they knew I was affiliated with an American university, which made me a lucrative target. However, they did not know that I also held Israeli citizenship. For the first month, they did not physically abuse me, but they gave me very little food to soften me up for interrogation. An officer named Maher led the questioning. He wore a mask to hide his identity. The idea of a Russian researcher studying Iraq was completely baffling to them, and they were convinced that all foreigners in the country were spies.
