On a hot morning last July, Vernon Spear, an eighty-five-year-old man, went to check a crab trap near his home in Maryland. While reaching inside, he scratched his arm on some metal. He was not worried at first because he had been scratched many times before. However, in the following hours, his arm began to turn dark purple and red. It soon swelled up, and he rushed to the emergency room. Doctors suspected an infection of Vibrio vulnificus, commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria. When this bacteria enters a wound, it quickly damages blood vessels and destroys body tissues. It can cause serious illness and even death. Infections like this used to be very rare in the north. But recently, because of rising water temperatures, these dangerous microbes are spreading much further north than before.
