Microbiologists are also worried about fungi. Most fungi grow best in cool temperatures, while the human body is too warm for them. This thermal barrier has protected humans from serious fungal diseases for a long time. However, climate change is forcing fungi to adapt to warmer environments. As global temperatures rise, these microbes are learning to survive in warmer conditions. This means they could eventually overcome our body's defenses. A dangerous example is Candida auris. This heat-resistant fungus was first found in a patient in 2009. Since then, it has spread to hospitals worldwide. It is very hard to kill because it is resistant to many common medicines. For elderly or sick patients, infections can be deadly. Scientists warn that as our planet continues to warm, we will have to face more adaptable and dangerous microbes.
