About ten years ago, something strange started happening in New Orleans. The number of accidents involving large trucks began to rise very quickly, but only in one specific area. This was on a fourteen-mile stretch of Interstate 10 in a neighborhood called New Orleans East. Suddenly, there were many more accidents between trucks and passenger cars reported each year. For example, in 2004, there were 69 sideswipe accidents with large trucks in the city. By 2017, that number had almost tripled. Insurance adjusters could not find any clear reason for this increase, like bad lighting or a steep road. For truck drivers, this part of the highway became a dangerous place to be avoided. It was like an asphalt Bermuda Triangle. Another strange thing was that the cars in these crashes almost always had multiple people inside.
