This is the first Substack piece I have ever written. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been able to write anything more substantive. All human motivations are to some extent mixed, but my contribution is motivated by two commitments: devotion to the church and a high level of alarm about the role of the church in the United States during this time of political and cultural crisis. I have preached only a handful of sermons since my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s seven years ago. In recent months, however, I have felt a pull to speak out again as the pressure to say something has increased. I believe it is important to address the challenges facing the church today, especially with the deep divisions in our society.
