I received some foundational advice early in my preaching career: 'Never exhort. Illustrate!' Exhortation involves telling people what to do, assuming they are already on board with your theme. This can alienate a portion of a mixed congregation. In our fraught society, preachers often choose one of two approaches: exhortation or avoidance. But there is another way: the way of illustrating. Instead of telling people to love their neighbor, show them how. Preachers should collect narratives to use as illustrations. Stories work to arouse feelings of neighborliness where there might be estrangement. The sense of 'we’re all in this together' needs to be supported with examples, not lectures. A man who disagreed with his neighbor on politics still promised, 'If there is a fire here, I will be here for you.'
