Five international space agencies are collaborating on this five-year project. When the five-tonne spacecraft arrives next summer, it will sync with the moon’s orbit and deploy a small French-German rover. Because gravity on Phobos is extremely weak, the rover is expected to bounce across the surface before coming to a halt. It will spend roughly 100 days surveying the harsh environment to find safe locations. Afterwards, a stationary lander will arrive to drill and collect soil samples before rocketing back into space to return to Earth.
