原文语境

Since 1903, the United States has established more than 580 National Wildlife Refuges. The government designated these beautiful lands and waters as protected areas to save plants and animals. Across the country, many different species find a safe home in these places. For example, a heavy bison walks through the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Colorado, with the Denver skyline visible far behind it. During winter, thousands of white snow geese take flight together in New Mexico, filling the sky. In Virginia, wild ponies drink water and eat grass peacefully. However, these places face some dangers. Recently, several environmental organizations filed lawsuits to stop construction plans. They want to prevent a road from being built through a protected area in Alaska.
