In 2014, a computer science student named Dzmitry Bahdanau worked on machine translation. Early artificial neural networks could not easily translate long sentences. To solve this problem, Bahdanau invented a mathematical method called "attention." This technique allowed computers to focus on the most important words in a sentence, no matter how long it was. In 2017, researchers at Google used this idea to build a new architecture called the transformer.
