I recently traveled to Norway to see a very special building. It is called Mjøstårnet, and it is the tallest wooden skyscraper in the world. This eighteen-story tower stands near a beautiful lake and is eighty-four meters high. Inside, you can find offices, apartments, and a nice hotel. I stayed on the eleventh floor, where almost everything was made of wood, from the floors and tables to a huge central column. This column is made of mass timber, which is also called glulam. To make it, workers glue many pieces of wood together under high pressure. This makes the wood as strong as steel or concrete. Using wood for large buildings is a great way to fight climate change. Trees naturally absorb carbon dioxide. When we use wood for buildings, the carbon stays locked away instead of going into the air. This could change how we build future cities.
